What is ISO 9001 certification?

ISO 9001 is structured around several key clauses, each addressing different aspects of a Quality Management System. These include: 

Clause 1 – Scope 

Clause 1 defines the scope of the standard and its applicability to any organisation that wants to enhance customer satisfaction through effective Quality Management System implementation. This clause is only informational stating that an organisation “a) needs to demonstrate its ability to consistently provide products and services that meet customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.” 

All the requirements of this International Standard are intended to be applicable to any organisation, regardless of its type or size, or the products and services it provides. 

Clause 2 – Normative References 

Clause 2 lists the reference documents essential for the application of ISO 9001. The supporting standard referenced in ISO 9001:2015 for its application is ISO 9000:2015. This standard covers terminology and fundamentals. 

Clause 3 – Terms and Definitions 

Clause 3 provides the definitions of terms used in the standard to ensure a common understanding. 

Clause 4 – Context of the Organisation 

Clause 4 involves understanding the internal and external factors that affect the Quality Management System; identifying stakeholders and defining the scope of the Quality Management System. Evidence that could be supplied to support this clause includes a SWOT analysis, a PESTLE, and a stakeholder analysis.

The recent amendments under Clauses 4.1 and 4.2 mean you must now consider climate change as internal or external issues, and/or as part of understanding the needs and expectations of interested parties.   

Clause 5 – Leadership 

This clause focuses on top management’s role in demonstrating leadership and commitment, establishing a quality policy, and assigning roles and responsibilities. The standard highlights that “Top management shall demonstrate leadership and commitment with respect to the quality management system by: a) taking accountability for the effectiveness of the quality management system; b) ensuring that the quality policy and quality objectives are established for the quality management system and are compatible with the context and strategic direction of the organiation.” Quality management cannot be delegated, and the organisation’s leaders are responsible for ensuring that it is being implemented and effective.

Clause 6 – Planning 

Clause 6 covers actions to address risks and opportunities, setting quality objectives, and planning changes to the Quality Management System. This needs to include an evaluation of the risk management process including a scale. The standard states under 6.1.1 “When planning for the quality management system, the organization shall consider the issues referred to in 4.1 and the requirements referred to in 4.2 and determine the risks and opportunities that need to be addressed”.

Clause 7 – Support 

Clause 7 involves managing resources, ensuring competence, awareness, communication, and maintaining documented information. To meet the key requirements of this clause, organisations must ensure requirements for products and services are defined and requests for products and services offered are effectively met; they should establish, implement and maintain an appropriate design and development process and ensure that any externally provided processes, products and services conform to requirements. 

Identification, verification, validation, and traceability are key elements of this clause, and any nonconforming outputs must be identifiable and controlled.
