There are currently two codes – the Renewable Energy Consumer Code (RECC) and the Home Insulation and Energy Systems Contractors Scheme (HIES). Their prices and support strategies are different, and you should consider the benefits of each before deciding which suits your own business needs most closely.
If the Applicant is not already a member of one of these Codes, it is possible to make applications to one of them and to the Flexi-Orb Scheme in parallel, although you will only be given an ‘approval in principle’ until you are certified.
2. The Application Process
All Flexi-Orb Applicants are assessed to the requirements of the Flexi-Orb Installation Scheme (INS-001), including the technical annexes for the technologies that they wish to be certified for.
Applicants will be assessed by a Certification Body to ensure that they install the renewable technology in line with the Scheme. The Certification Bodies are the operators of the Scheme – Flexi-Orb are the Scheme Owners.
The Certification Bodies will assess an applicant’s company practices and perform an on-site inspection and assessment of one or more installations. Applicants can choose the Certification Body from those that operate the Flexi-Orb Scheme – Simply Certification, Blue Flame Certification – and they will guide them through the process.
The pricing for the application, assessment and certification are listed on the Certification Bodies’ respective websites and the process to achieve certification is also mapped out. However, the time taken to progress through the certification journey may differ from one Certification Body to the other, depending on the volume of work that they each are currently handling and on the availability of resource. You should contact each to discuss this before making a decision on which Body to apply to.
3. Demonstration Of Competency
The Applicant will be asked to demonstrate how they engage the services of skilled, competent, and experienced individuals to fulfil each activity required to meet and maintain the requirements of the Scheme.
This includes confirmation of the competence of those individuals involved in the supply, design, installation, set to work and commissioning of renewable energy systems for which the Applicant is seeking certification. These competency requirements are detailed within the Scheme.
4. Quality Management System
Apart from the technical assessment, the Certification Body will also assess the Applicant’s operation of a Quality Management System (QMS). The assessing Certification Body will ensure that the Applicant meets the requirements of the QMS system, which is detailed in the Scheme, by assessing the documented processes and procedures.
